The technology giant Apple is preparing for a significant move in the world of artificial intelligence. The company plans to make its AI models available to external developers, which could fundamentally transform how smart devices are used and strengthen the app ecosystem in the App Store.
Apple Intelligence Heading into Developers’ Hands
According to reliable sources, Apple is intensively working on a software development kit (SDK) and related tools that will allow third parties to create new features based on the language models powering Apple Intelligence. The announcement of this groundbreaking step is expected on June 9 at the annual WWDC conference.
What this move will bring:
- Developers will be able to integrate Apple AI technologies into specific features or across entire applications
- Initially, Apple will provide access to smaller models running directly on devices (not the more powerful cloud systems)
- Opening the platform aims to bring more creative and useful applications of artificial intelligence
Catching Up with Competitors in Generative AI
Apple entered the generative artificial intelligence race later than its competitors. The Apple Intelligence platform introduced last year hasn’t yet delivered the expected breakthrough:
- Current features aren’t widely used
- Competitive platforms remain more powerful
- Some tools such as news summarization had to be paused due to errors
- Features like Genmoji (custom emoticons) don’t always meet expectations
The strategy of opening AI models to developers represents a bold attempt to reverse this trend and transform Apple into a leader in artificial intelligence.
Project Solarium Will Change User Interface
The biggest announcement at the upcoming WWDC conference, however, will likely be the introduction of completely redesigned operating systems for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The project, codenamed “Solarium,” will bring:
- Unified and more coherent user interface
- Design inspired by the visionOS system known from the Vision Pro headset
- New battery management mode powered by artificial intelligence
- Enhanced Health app with a virtual coach (planned for 2026)
Opportunity for Developers and Apple’s Financial Future
Until now, developers have had limited options for integrating Apple Intelligence into their apps. They could support features for prioritizing and summarizing notifications, writing tools, Genmoji, or Image Playground. However, they didn’t have access to the underlying AI models.
This limitation forced app creators to rely on third-party technologies:
- Core ML framework for open-source models
- Systems like TensorFlow from Google
- Specialized AI applications such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, or Claude
By opening its models, Apple apparently hopes to repeat the initial success of the App Store. Making this technology accessible could transform the iOS and macOS ecosystem into the largest platform for AI application development. From a financial perspective, an influx of new applications may also partially compensate for losses caused by regulatory changes in the App Store.
Next Steps: App Intents and Siri’s Future
Apple originally planned to introduce options for app developers earlier, including a new version of the App Intents feature. This would allow users more precise control over functions in apps through the Siri voice assistant. The company is now targeting the release of this feature within the iOS 19 cycle, which begins in September and continues into 2026.
